When Running from the Law was first released in 1989, the news media reacted with shock.
Could lawyers--professionals who seemed to have it all--really be that unhappy?
Now, in the year 2001, dissatisfaction among lawyers is an accepted reality. That awareness,
however, doesn't make the process any easier for lawyers struggling with their professional
identities. That's why I decided to make Running from the Law--which went out of print a couple
years ago--available again.
At first, I considered updating and rewriting the entire book to reflect the many changes in the
legal profession since 1989. After rereading the profiles, however, I realized that the complaints
and observations of those I interviewed in the late 1980's are as relevant now as they ever were.
And so, in this, the 3rd edition, I've updated biographical information for some of those profiled,
added Author's Notes where appropriate, and incorporated footnotes into the text to create a more
simple file. I've also added a chapter to the book--"Rehabilitating Your Career"--that reflects my belief
that true reform starts with the individual.

Reader Feedback:
- I just purchased and raced through Running from the Law. It met and exceeded
my hopes! Thanks so much for blazing the trail. - K.M., Allentown, PA
- Just finished Running from the Law. Couldn't wait to tell you what a wonderful
service you have provided to me and, I suspect, thousands of other disenchanted lawyers.
- S.H., Brainerd, MN
- As an associate in a fast-paced Washington practice, the title of your book intrigued
me--and also scared me. Once I picked up your book, I couldn't put it down and read it from
cover-to-cover in two sessions. How happy I was to learn that other people share my
discontent with the law. I'm not alone. Others have gotten out and lived to tell about it!
- B.C., Arlington, VA
- I read Running from the Law while vacationing in Bali. The combination of your book
and the vacation has changed my life. Thank you!
- N.W., Chicago, IL
- I have heard that little voice in my head say so many of the things the
lawyers profiled in your book said. Running from the Law gave me the incentive to
look seriously for alternatives.
- J.R., Tulsa, OK
